Celeritive Technologies, Inc., developers of VoluMill™ – The Pathway to Competitive Manufacturing through Ultra High-Performance Toolpath Innovations, announced today that it has signed a license agreement with NCCS of Irvine, California for its VoluMill technology. Under terms of the agreement, NCCS will integrate Celeritive’s ultra high-performance toolpath engine VoluMill into NCCS’ NCL Multi-axis machining software and offer it as an option upgrade. NCCS will offer VoluMill for 3-axis roughing applications, which is expected to provide users with dramatically improved rough milling productivity.

Celeritive Technologies, a developer of innovative competitive manufacturing solutions through high-speed machining technologies, announces the release of VoluMill™ v4.0. The latest version of the ultra high-performance toolpath engine includes the Active Chip Thickness Control (ACTC™) interface, which makes it easy to achieve even greater reductions in rough milling cycle time, and the new Non-Concentric Milling technology, designed to reduce tool load and improve chip clearance.

“Radial chip thinning has been a common topic of discussion over the past decade or so,” states Glenn Coleman, chief product officer of Celeritive. “It is a real phenomenon, easily defined and illustrated, but one whose benefits have proven elusive. ACTC now makes those benefits attainable by moving beyond the concept of chip thinning and giving our customers direct control over the actual chip thickness throughout their rough milling programs. This active management of chip thickness is producing reductions in cycle time up to 35% over current VoluMill toolpaths – which were already up to 5X faster than typical toolpaths.”

“We have reengineered VoluMill 4.0 from the ground-up to improve machining dynamics during arc moves,” says Dr. Evan Sherbrooke, chief technology officer of Celeritive. “Toolpaths have always contained arc moves that share the same center point and entry angle as arc moves on previous passes. Unfortunately, when the tool enters these arc moves, the tool load increases quite suddenly. Our new Non-Concentric Milling technology locates arcs at different center points, so that each successive pass begins its arc move sooner than on the previous pass. As a result, the tool load changes more gradually, and the chips evacuate more easily.”

Celeritive Technologies, Inc., an independent, third-party developer of innovative high-speed machining technologies that increase machine shop productivity, announces release of version 3.5.2 of its VoluMill(TM) toolpath software. VoluMill, the industry standard for 2- and 3-axis high-performance rough milling toolpath engines, has undergone a major re-engineering and is now 30 percent faster on complex parts than previous versions.

"The primary focus of version 3.5 was on reducing overall path length and machine cycle times," said Joe McChesney, VoluMill product manager. "Although customers have consistently reported cycle time reductions of 70 percent or more with older versions of VoluMill, we realized that there was still room for improvement, particularly when repositioning the tool between cuts."

Testing of VoluMill 3.5 has shown reductions in overall toolpath length by up to a third over version 3.0, and reductions in retracts to the rapid plane by up to 90%. Much of this improvement is due to Freeway Linking(TM), a new technique that lifts the tool slightly off the floor of the part and detours it at high speed around obstacles along a smooth path. In addition, VoluMill 3.5 introduces major improvements in toolpath sorting that minimize the length of linking moves between cutting passes.

Other enhancements include avoidance of fixtures or other obstacles, improved cutting around islands, and better use of multiprocessor computers, including dramatic reductions in processing time for the new generation of quad-core processors. In addition, VoluMill Universal(TM), a stand-alone version of VoluMill that can be used with any CAD/CAM system, now features toolpath verification and other new features that make part programming even easier.
