StorageCraft Technology Corporation, a provider of innovative backup, disaster recovery, system migration and data protection solutions for servers, desktops and laptops, has announced details of a successful project at i4 Product Design Ltd that is helping to protect critical Computer Aided Design systems from disruption using innovative snapshot technology and low cost off-site data storage policies.

i4 is a Scottish-based product development company located within the Edinburgh Science Triangle. With an impressive client list, in the technology, medical & consumer markets, i4 have developed over 60 products enabling clients including Flymo, Optos, SKF and Honeywell to realise new markets and increased sales through innovative product solutions.

The firm uses a number of CAD tools to create designs with individual projects reaching sizes of up to 8Gb of data. The firm had used a shared NAS device for ad-hoc backups with final projects archived onto DVD which were stored off-site. But as the firm has grown over the last few years, “the management time needed to backup files was becoming very onerous“ explains Brian Combe, Managing Director for i4, “it got to the point where it just wasn’t practical.”

i4 has a growing archive of previous work which it needs to keep on file, often for several years. The firm had considered several backup technologies but felt that it would be beneficial to approach an expert for advice. After attending a seminar by local firm, OneStop ITS, Combe approached the service provider seeking a better solution to its growing backup problem.

OneStop offered its Managed Backup Service using StorageCraft ShadowProtect, which backs up data from the central server as well as images from individual workstations. Even if CAD tools are in use, the ShadowProtect software takes a snapshot of any new or changed data. This backup set is copied onto a “swap out” removable hard disk which a company director takes off-site every night. This solution means that there are always two copies of data on-site and one copy off-site.

In the event of a server crash, data can be recovered very quickly, “We had an issue recently when a key financial document that was accidentally deleted,” explains Combe, “We called OneStop and they remotely restored an earlier version of the file in just a few minutes.”

i4 pay a single monthly fee which includes Managed Backup, hardware support and maintenance which Combe believes, “has proven good value for us. We now have a situation where our staff don’t have to worry about data backup and our files are protected for long term archival.”

“One of the things we like about OneStop is that they are good guys, they understand what it is we do and they tend to spend time trying to finding solutions that offer us good value.”  Combe adds.

Located in Draper, Utah, founded in 2003 and with European headquarters in Baar, Switzerland, and a UK office located London, StorageCraft Technology Corporation provides innovative disk-based backup, disaster recovery, system migration, data protection and security solutions for servers, desktops and laptops. StorageCraft delivers software products that reduce downtime, improve security and stability for systems and data and lower the total cost of ownership for servers, desktops and laptops.
