Mitutoyo America Corporation provided the popular Digimatic caliper and a micrometer to students pursuing degrees in the Engineering Technology Program at Northern Illinois University (NIU, DeKalb, IL). Combining theoretical education with industry-based, hands-on opportunities, the technology program is preparing the next generation of engineers and technologists.

Addressing the students, Matt Dye, president of Mitutoyo America Corp., said, “What a great opportunity you have here. You’re seeing a lot of the same equipment that’s being used on the shop floor today. Take it all in.” Dye shared that he was in a similar program in college and understanding how things get made correctly has provided him with many opportunities during his career.

Donald R. Peterson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology at NIU, added, “Metrology is important, even for those in R&D. This class is essential in any type of engineering.”

Mitutoyo has a long-standing relationship with the university. In 2008, Mitutoyo established the Mitutoyo Metrology Laboratory on the NIU campus to provide hands-on, educational experience for technology and engineering undergraduate students. The laboratory is one of the best-equipped educational metrology laboratories in the country, with everything from gage blocks and micrometers to coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), laser scanning micrometers and form measuring equipment.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces organizational changes. For the past 10 years, Mr. Shigeyuki Sasaki has provided leadership as vice president, executive vice president, and most recently, as president. His guidance has created a rich team environment with an emphasis on providing outstanding service to our customers throughout the United States and Canada. During his tenure as president, Mr. Sasaki oversaw expansion in virtually every department, as well as the opening of a new corporate headquarters and regional offices. As Mr. Sasaki enters his 40th year with Mitutoyo Corporation, he has been asked to join the team in Germany to support Mitutoyo European operations. Mr. Sasaki has assumed an advisory role within Mitutoyo Europe.

For much of the past 20 years, Matt Dye and Doug Adkins have worked together to provide sales management and corporate leadership at Mitutoyo America Corporation. They have assumed new roles within the company and continue to focus on the same core principles and beliefs of providing strong customer service with a dedicated team of highly trained professionals.

Matt Dye has been appointed president of Mitutoyo America Corporation. During his 21-year career, Matt has served as a distributor of Mitutoyo products and held various positions within Mitutoyo America. For the past five years, Matt has served as vice president of measuring instrument sales and technical services. During this time Matt emphasized the importance of customer service and worked to increase the skills and resources available to our sales division. With a background in distribution and strong support of our front line sales partners, Matt will continue to emphasize growth in product performance, individual skill enhancement and the importance of superior customer support.

Doug Adkins has been appointed executive vice president of Mitutoyo America Corporation. Doug’s career started in the United States Marine Corps and has continued for the past 25 years in the industrial distribution sector, with 20 years in several different capacities at MAC, including his most recent position as vice president of distributed products. With experience in the high-volume small tool and major instrument line at MAC, Doug will continue to fully support the growth of sales in the United States through our established distributor network.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces the relocation and grand opening of the M3 Solution Center in Huntersville, NC. This new 7,700-square-foot facility is conveniently located for customers to schedule appointments for product demonstrations, assistance with application challenges and metrology solutions, as well as product and educational training seminars. The M3 Solution Center is located at 11515 Vanstory Drive, Suite 140, Huntersville, NC 28078.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces the addition of the Quick Vision Active series to the line-up of vision measurement systems. This CNC vision measuring system is an easy-to-operate, space-saving model with advanced functionality to meet many contact and noncontact measuring needs.

The Quick Vision Active is highly efficient and flexible, offering a wide field of view with interchangeable objective zoom lenses to meet the challenges of measuring small to large features. The 8-step zoom lens can achieve a magnification range of 0.5X to 7X while maintaining crisp image quality. The 1X optional objective achieves a magnification range of 0.5X to 3.5X with a working distance of 74 mm. The 2X option can achieve a magnification range of 1X to 7X.

Quick Vision Active is available with measuring ranges of 10 x 8 x 6 inches (250 x 200 x 150 mm) or 16 x 16 x 8 inches (400 x 400 x 200 mm), with or without the touch-probe measuring option. QVPAK software uses edge detection and pattern recognition to locate and orientate the coordinate system with minimal operator input, ensuring accuracy and repeatability of the measurement results.

Mitutoyo Announces Strato Apex 574 CMM

Mitutoyo America Corporation is pleased to announce the new STRATO-Apex574 Coordinate Measuring Machine to its STRATO-Apex line of CMMs. This new configuration offers a more compact footprint while still offering the same state-of-the-art blend of high-speed operation and highly accurate measurement. The STRATO-Apex574 is a compact bridge-type design featuring accuracy as low as 0.7µm. It utilizes a 0.05µm resolution scale and temperature range of 18 to 22 C° (64.4 to 71.6 F°). This CMM is ideal for manufacturers who produce high precision small parts for industries such a medical, precision mold, and aerospace that require a smaller footprint for CMM inspection.

The STRATO-Apex line offers high speed and accuracy in measurement that is ensured by a specially designed machine body that has improved rigidity of the structure, a precision guide mechanism, ultra-high precision crystallized glass scales with near-zero thermal expansion and the incorporation of newly developed compensation technology. A standard vibration-dampening unit is included as a standard accessory to round out this CMMs advanced capabilities. The 159,300 sq. foot, multi-million dollar facility will include a state-of-the-art M3 Solution Center offering the ability to provide interactive product demonstrations; a world-class A2LA Accredited Calibration Lab, supported by fully staffed Field Service and Repair departments; abundant warehouse space necessary for timely distribution of product, parts and accessories; a premier educational facility (Mitutoyo Institute of Metrology), for all training and instructive metrology resources; and free flowing office areas to encourage inter-departmental collaboration and communication.

To assist with the funding for the new construction Mitutoyo turned to the City of Aurora and a newly approved Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district. Without the support from the City of Aurora and funding through this TIF district, the new headquarters building would not have been pragmatic for Mitutoyo.
 
The new facility is expected to open in the fall of 2013, which coincides with the celebration of Mitutoyo America Corporation's 50th Anniversary.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of new, generation D MF/MF-U® measuring microscopes. The new MF/MF-U® measuring microscopes offer the long working-distance objectives and sub-micron accuracy glass scales of previous models.

Enhancements Include:

  • Three-axis, motor-driven positioning with variable speed joystick control and collision prevention (Z axis) to reduce operator fatigue and increase accuracy.
  • The motorized X-, Y- and Z-axis motor functions that can be combined with a new Mitutoyo Vision Unit to produce a new levels of automation in toolmaker microscopes.
  • Laser Auto-Focus (LAF) models provide high accuracy and repeatability in two modes of operation: Just Focus (JF) mode for quick focusing and Tracking Focus (TF) for maintaining focus as the stage moves.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces release of the new Quick Vision® WLI vision measuring machine. Besides an optical vision head, the Quick Vision® WLI also incorporates a white light interferometer (WLI) head. Together these heads enable high accuracy performance of non-contact vision plus non-contact 3D measurement of high aspect-ratio minute form (Z = Sub µm ~ 100µm) functions in a single machine - eliminating the need to move a workpiece from one type of machine to another.
 
As a result, the Quick Vision® WLI offers a significant throughput improvement for non-contact measurement of items combining both 2D and minute form 3D features in a single workpiece - example subjects could include IC chips and packages, hybrid chassis, lead frames, and many types of precision machined and molded parts.
 
The Quick Vision® WLI interferometer head splits a beam of white light in two; one beam goes towards a reference mirror and the other beam goes to the workpiece. As the reference objective is moved along the Z-axis, a white "interference ring" is observed on the focus point; analysis of this ring makes it possible to determine the 3D shape of the feature under observation.
 
The Quick Vision® WLI performs 2D/3D form evaluation using Mitutoyo FORMPAK-QV/FORMTRACEPAK-PRO software which features a refined, intuitive GUI. Results can be displayed in 2D/3D graphics for easy interpretation; a variety of editing and control tools are standard.

Mitutoyo Announces New MACH®-3A CNC CMM

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of the new MACH®-3A CNC Coordinate Measuring Machine - a CMM that brings levels accuracy and performance expected from Mitutoyo to in-line applications. Instead of the basic GO/NO GO judgments common to in-line gaging, the MACH®-3A CNC provides comprehensive measurements to enable statistical control utilizing numeric data. The MACH®-3A is a clean slate design embodying numerous features dedicated to functionality and high-performance for in-line applications.
 
The Mitutoyo MACH®-3A CMM is a horizontal-arm type machine with high speed and high acceleration (max. speed of 1,212mm/s, max. acceleration of 11,882mm/s2 - both in vector direction) that contributes to high throughput for greater productivity and lower total owning and operating costs.
 
The MACH®-3A is compact, requiring only a minimal envelope which minimizes its impact on line layouts. This, plus high-environmental resistance, make the MACH®-3A easy to integrate into both upstream and downstream processes - even under demanding production floor conditions.
 
Conventional CMMs typically require dust-controlled environments to maintain accuracy. But with a drive unit protected by covers, precision linear guide systems for each axis instead of air bearings, and with its controller and PC installed in a dust-proof housing, the Mitutoyo MACH®-3A is highly-resistant to the effects of dust, mist and humidity. Additionally the MACH®-3A tolerates a wide range of operating temperatures - guaranteed to maintain accuracy between 5° and 40°C. Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of the innovative, new Ko-ga-me® measurement head - designed to bring full capability to applications where a compact, high-performance, 3D CNC, 2- or 3-axis measurement system would be ideal.

The Mitutoyo Ko-ga-me® is small-sized, requiring only a minimal envelope (17.3" [440mm] x 16.1" [410mm] x 4.7' [120mm]) and weighing 17.6 lbs. (8kg). This makes Ko-ga-me® agile and easy for a customer to mount - using either an available fixed base (wherein the workpiece moves during measurement) or using a moving-axis mounting system of the customer's own design.
     
Mitutoyo Ko-ga-me® measuring systems are available for horizontal or vertical installation and can be used in stand-alone applications or integrated into work cells. Ko-ga-me® is ideal for inspection of large or small workpieces and offers a wide range of available measurement probes including touch-trigger, optical or constant contact probing.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of Contracer® CV-3200/4500 Series contour measuring systems. These instruments offer significantly increased productivity by combining fast traverse speeds* with many time saving and accuracy enhancing innovations.

The new Contracer® CV-3200/4500 Series machines feature a precision arc-scale built into the Z1 axis (detector) allowing the arc trajectory of the stylus tip to be read directly, thus minimizing error for best in-class accuracy**. Both series employ an innovative detector arm that lowers workpiece interference while expanding range in the Z1 (detector) axis. The arm is also equipped with collision auto-stop to assure measurement safety even during high-speed movement. Additional safety features in the joystick unit include a drive speed control knob and emergency stop switch.

The Contracer® CV-4500 features continuous measurement of both upper and lower surfaces via a double-sided, conical stylus. This continuous measurement data can be used to facilitate analysis of features that otherwise would be difficult to measure, such as the effective diameter of an internal screw-thread.

The CV-3200/4500 Series machines incorporate a Mitutoyo ABS (Absolute®) scale eliminating the need to reset the origin. Dedicated calibration gages enable the systems to perform sensitive calibrations including Z1-axis gain, symmetry, and stylus radius, in a single, simple operation.

Contracer® CV-3200/4500 Series contour measuring systems include FORMTRACEPAK® contour analysis software as standard. Available in 15 language views, FORMTRACEPAK® offers complete surface roughness and contour inspection, and reporting functionality including new measuring force adjustment capabilities. Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of the new Surftest® SJ-411/412 portable surface roughness tester. Innovative features, high accuracy and competitive pricing make this instrument the new value leader in its class.

The Mitutoyo Surftest® SJ-411/412 provides a large, 5.7" color LCD touch screen for high visibility and enhanced operability. The instrument conforms to roughness standards JIS-B0601-2001, JIS-B0601-1994, JIS-B0601-1982, VDA, ISO-1997 and ANSI. After measurement is performed, a waveform with scale and ruler options is displayed for detailed analysis. The presentation corresponds to cissoidal calculations whereby one measurement can evaluate two different conditions. A simple contour analysis function is included (4 types: step, step amount, area and coordinate difference). In addition, a DAT (Digital Adjustment Tilting) function is included for easy work piece leveling.

The Surftest® SJ-411/412 enables statistic measurements of up to 3 parameters each for as many as 300 samples providing average, standard deviation, max, min, pass rate and histogram. Up to ten measurement conditions and the stored data can be called up, displayed and printed using a built-in thermal printer. Also, the SJ-411/412 can store up to 10 measuring conditions in its on-board memory.

The Surftest® SJ-411/412 supports a micro-SD card (option) for storage of up to 10,000 text data, 500 measuring conditions, 1000 measuring data, 500 images (BMP), 500 statistic data or auto-save up to the last 10 measuring data. Total and sectional measurement results can be displayed in addition to evaluation and BAC/ADC curves.

The SJ-411/412 includes 16 selectable languages. A maximum of 5 custom styli can be recorded and calibrated independently. The SJ-411/112's manual column stand works with three new optional accessories (auto set unit, tilting adjustment unit and X-axis adjustment unit) to assist in setup and to enhance operability.

The Surftest® SJ-411/412 provides SPC output; RS-232C and external SW connectivity is also supported while available Mitutoyo software packages make it easy to integrate the SJ-411/412 into high-level network environments for true enterprise-wide functionality. Security is managed via a password lock to restrict changes that could cause operation errors.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of version 10.0 of its QVPAK® suite of vision measurement software.  Now provided as standard with all Mitutoyo QuickVision® 3D CNC vision measurement systems, QVPAK® 10.0 makes it even easier and more intuitive to control all relevant vision measurement processes including lighting control, magnification and part programming.

QVPAK® 10.0 includes new features that make part programming more convenient than ever.  For example, the user interface can be freely split into windows that can then be dragged anywhere on the desktop, resized, minimized, placed atop one another or hidden.  Each user can custom design individualized screen set-ups on several monitors including, for example, widescreen display of the workpiece image.

The new loop generation allows virtual display and execution of complex loop strategies associated with part program creation.  The operator is presented with a graphic visualization of the loop prior to execution allowing greater understanding prior to loop generation.  This function is available with both Array (Coordinate) and Circular (Rotational) Loop methods.  It is now possible to "promote" and "demote" features and methodologies to and from a loop.

QVPAK® 10.0 also introduces QVEasyEditorTM with multiple language views.  QVEasyEditorTM enables the operator to read, debug, and modify part programs - all without requiring any previous part programming experience.  QVEasyEditorTM represents a part program as visualized in a tree structure format making it easy to create, edit, insert, copy, paste, evaluate and execute.

QVEasyEditorTM also simplifies recording of part programs:  Instead of having to carry out the preliminary step of "learning" a part program in a separate mode, the software now goes directly into the recording mode every time it is started.  In recording mode, part programs can be easily edited as each individual line can be opened by a double-click.  This "modeless" operation means the user is not required to exit the learning mode for editing but can execute lines immediately as edited, or, lines can be added right away for testing.

Newly shipped Mitutoyo QuickVision 3D CNC vision measuring systems are now equipped with QVPAK® 10.0; an upgrade of existing QuickVision machines to the 10.0 version of the software is also available.

Mitutoyo America Corporation announces availability of its new, High-Accuracy Digimatic® Digital Micrometer – the first micrometer to offer 0.1µm resolution measurement. Now, high-accuracy measurement can be had in a convenient, hand-held tool.

The High-Accuracy Digimatic® Micrometer utilizes the Absolute® rotary sensor (patent pending) manufactured utilizing Mitutoyo’s own high precision screw machining technology. This sensor reduces instrument error to ±0.5µm to deliver high-accuracy with no trade-off in operability. The Absolute® system eliminates the need to reset the origin each time power is turned on thus enabling measurement immediately upon start-up. In addition, the measurement origin can be preset to any value within the display range to reduce set-up time and improve repeatability. The display can be zeroed at any position, making comparison measurement easier. Display resolution can be switched to 0.5µm if 0.1µm measurement is not required.

The Mitutoyo High-Accuracy Digimatic® Micrometer features an extremely rigid frame for stable measurement while a constant-force barrel/spindle mechanism eliminates the possibility of overspeed errors. Transference of body heat to the instrument is reduced by use of a heat shield (removable), minimizing errors attributable to thermal expansion while handheld measurements are performed.

Additionally, the Mitutoyo High-Accuracy Digimatic® Micrometer supports output to measurement data applications such as MeasurLink®, Mitutoyo’s proprietary statistical-processing and process-control program which performs statistical analysis and provides real-time display of measurement results for SPC applications. The program can also be linked to a higher-level network environment for enterprise-wide functionality.
