PolyOne has unveiled an all-new online Decorative Films Design Center, providing visual inspiration for those who want to add interest and appeal to surfaces by applying printed films.

The SurfaceChoice™ Films Design Center houses over 50 images of varied film patterns and effects, from wood grain to embossed. Images are easily filtered by category, color family or a combination of options.

“This online Design Center is actually a complement to our design team located at the Salisbury, Maryland production facility,” said Greg Zeis, specialty business director, PolyOne Designed Structures and Solutions. “We have long offered our customers creative support, including design assistance, color matching and blending. Now, we’ve added an online tool customers can also use to gain design inspiration and improve their speed to market.”

As visitors to the site explore each pattern, they are given the option to zoom in for a closer look, or to save an image for future use. They can also request physical samples of their chosen design.

The unveiling of the SurfaceChoice Films Design Center also celebrates the launch of the SurfaceChoice brand – an updated trade name that reflects a simplified and modernized approach to PolyOne decorative printed films.

Filip Technologies was able to subdue an all-too-familiar parental anxiety last year when it introduced the FiLIP™ 2, a wearable phone and locator for kids. It’s unique blend of GPS, Wi-Fi location, and GSM cell tower triangulation, built into a watch-like design, helps families stay connected.

To make sure the FiLIP would be comfortable and appealing, the founder’s son was asked to choose a soft-touch material from among several samples. He selected PolyOne’s GLS™ thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material that provides smooth, silky texture for comfort along with bright colors for an added visual appeal.

To create the product, the TPE material was overmolded onto an underlying rigid thermoplastic. Further, PolyOne colorants brought the material to life with dynamic colors such as Superhero Blue, Watermelon Red, Limesicle Green, and Awesome Orange. The GLS TPE material also stands up to the demands of active kids during outdoor play and sports, staying bright and processing easily.

Founded in 2009 by Sten Kirkbak after he briefly lost track of his young son Filip in a shopping mall, Filip Technologies, Inc. is privately held with offices in New York, N.Y. and Raleigh, N.C.

At the European Bioplastics Conference, PolyOne Corporation [NYSE:POL] introduced reFlex™ 300 bioplasticizer, the latest addition to the Company’s industry-leading family of Sustainable Solutions. Derived from rapidly renewable feedstocks and certified to contain 99 percent bio-based content, this non-phthalate alternative provides a one-for-one replacement for general-purpose plasticizers used in flexible vinyl formulations. This new material was developed to help customers meet their sustainability goals with a non-phthalate, bio-derived solution.

“We continue to see increased marketplace demand for renewable technology for plasticizers,” said Rob Rosenau, president, PolyOne Performance Products and Solutions. “Our reFlex 300 bioplasticizer enables customers to expand their offerings with differentiated alternatives that heed consumer calls for eco-conscious solutions.”

PolyOne reFlex 300 bioplasticizer can help customers reduce their carbon footprint and eliminate phthalates without compromising in-service performance. Further, this new technology assists manufacturers and brand owners in satisfying the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which bans certain phthalates in products used by children.

Certified under the USDA BioPreferred® program to be 99 percent biobased, reFlex 300 bioplasticizer can enable users to explore certification of their own products to this standard, potentially resulting in preferential procurement status with the United States Federal Government.

Flexible vinyl markets and applications that can benefit from reFlex 300 bioplasticizer include:

  • Healthcare – tubing and connectors
  • Electrical components – plugs and insulators
  • Building and construction products – weather stripping, gaskets, office furniture, and flooring
  • Consumer goods – toys and shoes

PolyOne reFlex™ 300 bioplasticizer is the second technology to be commercialized as a result of a development alliance between PolyOne and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM). In April of this year, PolyOne introduced fast-fusing reFlex™ 100 bioplasticizer.
