GlobalSpec (12)

GlobalSpec announced the availability of its newest research report, Economic Outlook Survey 2012: State of the Industrial Marketplace.

The report features the results of a comprehensive survey of more than 1,300 engineering, technical, manufacturing and industrial professionals in the United States, 50 percent of whom influence more than $50,000 in annual spending on components, equipment or services.

The survey results reflect economic conditions that are clearly mixed, with some companies and sectors performing better than others. Among the industrial companies that participated in GlobalSpec’s Economic Outlook Survey, 49 percent expect to finish the year ahead of plan, with the rest anticipating that sales will remain flat or fall short of expectations.

Key findings include:

  • The area of concern most cited among industrial professionals is the economy (55 percent).
  • Other concerns include quality (45 percent), improving production efficiencies (43 percent), and expanding to new markets (38 percent).
  • Forty-nine percent of companies anticipate growth for the rest of the year, while 32 percent anticipate no change.
  • In terms of revenue expectations compared to the previous year, 40 percent anticipate higher sales and 32 percent anticipate lower sales than last year.
  • The highest expectations for increased sales is in the Biotechnology/Pharmaceuticals sector, with the majority (58 percent) estimating that sales will be ahead of plan in 2012.
  • The hardest hit sector is Communications – Data/Telecom/Wireless Networks, with 57 percent expecting sales to be down from their 2012 plan.
  • The top three areas where industrial companies are spending more time and effort are entering new markets (56 percent), new product design & development (50 percent), and researching future projects (50 percent).

“In an economy that’s still finding its legs, industrial marketers must make smart decisions on where to invest their limited time, money and resources” said Chris Chariton, senior vice president, product management & supplier marketing for GlobalSpec. “There are growth opportunities but companies need to know what industries are expanding and what activities are getting the most attention and, most importantly, understand the platforms that make greater use of their marketing investments and present the best opportunity to engage new customers.”

Along with the results from the latest research, the report also offers recommendations for industrial suppliers on how to:

  • focus on where the outlook is brightest
  • maintain or increase their marketing presence
  • connect with prospects and customers online

The report is available for free at: beta.globalspec.com/advertising/trends-wp/2012_EconomicOutlookSurvey

Although marketing channels may change, the primary goals of industrial marketers remain consistent and they’re continuing to deploy both digital and traditional programs to meet their objectives. That’s just one of the highlights from GlobalSpec’s annual Industrial Marketing Trends Survey of B-to-B marketers in the industrial sector. Respondents shared their goals and challenges, how their budgets are allocated and the marketing channels they rely on to help reach their objectives.

The research, conducted by GlobalSpec, a leading provider of digital media solutions for suppliers and distributors seeking exposure to engineering, manufacturing and technical professionals provides an understanding of what is driving industrial marketers today.

“While suppliers are devoting more resources to online channels than ever before, it may not be enough, given the near-universal use of the Internet by industrial professionals for their purchasing needs,” said Chris Chariton, senior vice president, product management & supplier marketing for GlobalSpec. “Suppliers should shift even more of their marketing dollars to digital media solutions and better reach their potential customers when this audience is online and researching buying decisions.”

Some key findings from the report include:

  • 35 percent of companies are spending more on marketing in 2012 than they did in 2011. About half are spending the same as last year.

  • 67 percent stated that customer acquisition or lead generation is their primary marketing goal in 2012, the same top two marketing goals for the past six years.

  • 42 percent of companies have increased their online marketing budget in 2012, and 47 percent of companies spend more than a third of their overall marketing budget online.

  • 68 percent of companies indicated they will increase spending on Webinars in 2012, making it the top channel where industrial companies will increase spending.

  • The most-used social media applications are LinkedIn (73 percent), Facebook (55 percent), and Twitter (40 percent).

  • Only 17 percent of companies are satisfied or very satisfied with their social media efforts, and just 7 percent have a full-time employee dedicated solely to social media.

Survey results, analysis and recommendations will be presented at the Industrial Marketing Digital Summit, a free online event hosted by GlobalSpec and geared to industrial marketers on Wednesday, July 11.

IHS to Acquire GlobalSpec

Written by

IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of information and analytics, announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire GlobalSpec, Inc., the leading specialized vertical search, product information and digital media company serving the engineering, manufacturing and related scientific and technical market segments, from Warburg Pincus LLC. The $135 million acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including expiration or termination of the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976.

“Acquisitions continue to be a key element in the strategic development of the IHS business and a driver of the company’s long-term growth. While the purchase price for GlobalSpec represents a strategic double-digit EBITDA multiple, it will enable a dramatic transformation of our product design portfolio representing approximately 15 percent of our revenue,” said IHS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jerre Stead. “GlobalSpec, combined with our global scale and industry expertise, will create an even greater destination for trusted product information and technical insight for GlobalSpec’s global community of more than seven million engineers. We will market our solutions to a large segment of engineers around the world who currently do not use IHS services.”

Founded in 1996, GlobalSpec provides its registered users with a domain-specific search engine for more than 3,500 current product, service and technology vertical categories, a vibrant community of engineers helping other engineers solve important problems, and more than 70 product and industry e-newsletters that help engineers and related professionals perform their key job tasks with the highest levels of accuracy and productivity.

“The acquisition of GlobalSpec is a significant development that presents a unique opportunity for IHS to transform our existing engineering specifications and standards business to long-term double-digit growth,” added IHS President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Key. “We will leverage IHS global scale in sales and market presence to create large strategic synergies and revenues as we elevate our Product Design business to accretive growth rates and margins."

Due to the vibrant community of engineers and manufacturing knowledge workers that GlobalSpec has developed, it has become a key destination for engineers as well as suppliers of products and services that support a worldwide engineering audience. The company has a global user base of more than seven million registered users – a user community that grew by 500,000 new registrants during 2011. GlobalSpec is headquartered in East Greenbush, N.Y. and employs approximately 230 people.

Added Stead: “With the acquisition of GlobalSpec, IHS will transform engineering workflows and decision making with seamless integration of information, insight and productivity tools. This market-leading workflow solution set will provide unique value to customers and drive long-term, double-digit growth at accretive margins."

The acquisition will also be discussed on the previously announced IHS second quarter 2012 earnings conference call on June 18, 2012.

GlobalSpec, the leading provider of online marketing programs for companies targeting the engineering, technical and manufacturing communities, today announced the availability of its newest research report, “2011 Economic Outlook Survey: Improving Conditions Present Market Opportunity for Suppliers.”

The survey results reflect economic indicators that are more optimistic than they have been in several years, with spending and sales expected to increase for a majority of companies. According to respondents, 55 percent of industrial companies anticipate sales will be up in 2011, while only 24 percent expect sales to be down. Departmental budgets are also increasing, with 30 percent of engineers and technical professionals reporting that their departments plan to increase budgets in 2011, compared to only 18 percent in 2010.

The report features the results of a comprehensive survey of more than 1,000 engineering, technical, manufacturing and industrial professionals in the United States, 54 percent of whom influence more than $50,000 in annual spending on components, equipment or services.

Other highlights from the 2011 Economic Outlook Survey results include:

* From 2010 to 2011, the percentage of companies spending more has increased in 24 of 28 industries, with the other four industries holding at the same level of spending as last year. The top industries spending more are Manufacturing Equipment, Test and Measurement Equipment, Fabrication Services, Building and Construction, Process Equipment, and Electronic Components.

* Industries with the largest percentage of respondents anticipating higher sales are Paper, Printing and Textiles (82 percent), Packaging Machinery (78 percent), and Chemicals, Plastics and Rubber (74 percent). Oil and Gas saw a significant jump – from 40 percent of respondents in 2010 to 72 percent in 2011 – in those who expect sales to be up this year. The Automotive and Consumer Products/Electronics industries also anticipate higher sales.

* The top three areas where industrial companies are investing the most are researching future products (50 percent), new product design and development (49 percent) and entering new markets (49 percent).

* Engineers are devoting more time to projects to save energy (45 percent), reduce waste and scrap (43 percent), and increase production capacity of existing lines (43 percent).

* Every industry will experience the same or increased spending in 2011 – 85 percent of respondents said the would spend the same or more for mechanical components, 84 percent for electrical and electronic components, and 82 percent for calibration and testing services, as well as materials, chemicals and adhesives.

* The majority of engineers and technical professionals (51 percent) are working on more projects in 2011 than they did in 2010, up nine percentage points from last year’s survey.

“This is the brightest economic outlook the industrial market has had in the past few years,” said Chris Chariton, senior vice president of product management and supplier marketing for GlobalSpec. “Smart suppliers continue to enhance their marketing strategies in order to achieve a strong return on their investments. The most successful suppliers are investing in measurable marketing programs as they seek to expand their online presence into growing markets, and this report provides excellent recommendations that will enable to take advantage of both the short- and long-term market opportunities.”
