Evergreen Brick Works hosts Toronto's first Mini Maker Faire, May 7-8, 2011

This Mother's Day weekend, Torontonians will have a chance to indulge their inner MacGyver as DIY (do-it-yourself) enthusiasts emerge from their workshops to display home-made robots, 3D printers, invisible paintings and other marvels at the GTA's first-ever Mini Maker Faire. Maker Faire is the ultimate celebration of making, crafting, DIYing, tinkering, hacking and sharing. It's a family-friendly weekend where makers of all kinds will show off their projects and hold how-to workshops, with hands-on activities for all ages. Exhibits on display will include robots, laser cutting, letterpress printing, a 3D print gallery and kinetic sculptures. Highlights include:

* Text-to-hold technology that converts text messages to origami
* Letterpress and 3D printing
* Hand-spun yarn demonstrations
* Interactive touch-screen technology
* Invisible paintings that become visible through a digital camera
* Digital drawing that generates music
* Snowflake photography cameras
* How to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen
* Learn to solder workshops with staff from Efston Science

Something different for Mother's Day
On both Saturday and Sunday, Maker Faire offers two workshops especially geared to help families celebrate Mother's Day. With an adult or on their own, kids can make gifts for Mom with the following workshops:

* No-sew sewing: Make a book bag, circle scarf or a corsage out of T-shirts without a needle and thread
* Conductive thread embroidery: Create a framed embroidery design with LED lights
