Planetary Resources announced that it has finalized a 25 million euro agreement that includes direct capital investment of 12 million euros and grants of 13 million euros from the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the banking institution Société Nationale de Crédit et d’Investissement (SNCI). The funding will accelerate the company’s technical advancements with the aim of launching the first commercial asteroid prospecting mission by 2020.

The public equity position is taken by the SNCI; and Georges Schmit, an advisory board member of the initiative, joins Planetary Resources’ Board of Directors.

Core hardware and software technologies developed at Planetary Resources were tested on orbit last year. The company’s next mission, now undergoing final testing, will validate the thermographic sensor that will precisely measure temperature differences of objects on Earth. When deployed on future commercial asteroid prospecting missions, the sensor will acquire key data related to the presence of water and water-bearing minerals on asteroids. The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), a UI LABS collaboration, announced the release of its second 2016 Project Call, which requests proposals for four topics across three DMDII Technology Thrusts: Intelligent Machines (IM), Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise (AME), and Advanced Analysis (AA).

The title and goal of each Project Call Topic are listed below:

Low-Cost Robotics and Automation (IM)

This Project Call Topic seeks robotics and automation solutions that are affordable, reconfigurable, and adaptable, and that exhibit the precision, repeatability, and productivity of conventional automated solutions. They must also exhibit flexibility at a cost that makes them accessible to small and midsize businesses.

Real-Time Optimization of Factory Operations (AME)

The objective of this Project Call Topic is to improve factory decision-making by transforming raw data into meaningful and useful information for analysis and decision recommendations. Example analytical tools include online analytical processing, data mining, complex event processing, text mining, predictive and prescriptive analytics, and active performance management.

Seamless Work Flows from Design to Fabrication (AA)

The goal of this Project Call Topic is to develop software solutions that significantly reduce the manual input and expertise required to rapidly translate designs into fabricated parts during manufacturing, and thus to fully utilize the capabilities of available machine tools.

Human Systems Integration (AA)

This Project Call Topic aims to develop digital and physical technologies to improve human systems integration through data collection and analysis to reduce the costs and inefficiencies that stem from industrial workers performing tasks in environments that do not adequately take into account human size variation or capabilities.

To convey additional information to interested stakeholders, DMDII will host a Project Call Workshop at the UI LABS Innovation Center on September 8, 2016. Workshop attendees will hear from the DMDII leadership team about the institute’s mission, vision, and goals, as well as how to do business with DMDII. GF Machining Solutions has announced an agreement to purchase 100 percent of the shares of Microlution Inc, a Chicago-based developer of micro-machining products incorporating milling and laser technologies.

The acquisition of Microlution is in line with GF Machining Solutions’ strategy to enlarge its technology portfolio to fully meet the needs of manufacturers in targeted industry segments, including aerospace and medical. Microlution and GF Machining Solutions have mutually agreed to keep the sales conditions confidential.

FwdForce announced the closed beta release of its crowdfunding platform for crowd-powered open challenges. As a challenge-oriented crowdfunding platform, FwdForce flips the traditional model of crowdfunding by supporting only challenges that gain a critical mass and introducing the element of competition into the model. The closed beta will be available for a limited time to a select number of individuals and companies seeking to get involved.

“Current crowdfunding platforms fail to bring to viable products to market,” said Moshe Baum, co-founder and CEO of FwdForce. “The products being promoted are often over-promised and under-delivered, with no guarantee of delivery if funded. We’re looking to shake up the space with our new model that will dramatically increase the products that go to market.”

According to Kickstarter Statistics, only 36 percent of the campaigns conducted actually get funded. Of the products that do get funded, only 20 percent of the products get shipped to consumers on time, and quality often leaves a lot to be desired. FwdForce is designed to create challenges that entice participation and lead to product creation.

There are two different types of challenges available on FwdForce:

  • Crowd-Powered Challenges: The challenge is funded by the crowd and the IP belongs to the contenders.
  • Sponsored or Company-Issued Challenges: The sponsor initiates a challenge, funds the minimal prize and sets the criteria, and also owns the full IP at the end. Alternatively, sponsors can fund a portion of the challenge as a component of an overall solution.

Contenders interested in participating must first submit concepts, then backers will vote for a short list of contenders to get funding for prototyping. All prototypes created are required to be submitted for testing by given deadline. FwdForce uses a certified third-party lab to conduct tests and declare a winner. Backers get voting rights on the shortlist concepts, and typical perks like future discounts of the result product.

At launch, FwdForce will have more than 50 challenges on the site, including:

  • Truly Wireless Earbuds with Carrying Case. Design an elegant, affordable and usable wireless solution. This has been a long awaited concept, but there are not enough commercially available products. The product must provide at least 3 hours or listening with 8 standby hours and offer an easy fit.
  • Better Bicycle Lock. Create a lighter, more secure bicycle lock with GPS and an alarm. The lock should use a more convenient unlocking mechanism that does a better job of deterring criminals, while weighing less than 3 pounds at a price tag under $100.
  • Portable 3D Printer. 3D Printers are a crowd favorite, but there is a need for a well-designed, portable version that fits the needs of on-the-go freelance industrial designers and hobbyists. The product must fold into a backpack in less than 2 minutes, weigh less than 14 pounds, cost less than $2,500, and have a modular design that can scale for larger volumes.
  • Home Surveillance Drone. Classic surveillance systems use fixed cameras that are often easy to spot and trick, whereas a smart dedicated drone can provide more views with fewer cameras that are less predictable. This creation must be small yet have the ability to carry a high-resolution camera with night vision, self-charging, capable of monitoring multiple drones that operate 25-plus minute flights, and cost less than $1,150 for a drone/base unit combination (additional drones for $800 or less).

Chris Young was the co-founder of the first set of media products and events to cater for the European and North American additive manufacturing (AM) sector back in the early 1990s. In response to its growing medical device business, GW Plastics announced the expansion of its Royalton, Vermont Manufacturing and Technology Center. GW Plastics broke ground on a 21,000 square foot expansion – scalable to 50,000 square feet -- to accommodate the additional growth of its Thermoplastic and Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) injection molding and medical device contract assembly business. The expansion will also allow for improved workforce training and development facilities at its Technical and Training Center, where GW Plastics conducts scientific injection molding training and manufacturing classes for its employees, customers, and local area high schools.

Industrial 3D printer manufacturer voxeljet from Friedberg, Germany is celebrating a special kind of anniversary. XPRIZE, the global leader in incentivized prize competitions, and Google announced the winners of the 2015 MOONBOTS Challenge, also considered the “Google Lunar XPRIZE for Kids.” It is an international competition that inspires the next generation of space explorers and innovators by inviting kids ages 8-17 to design, create and program their own lunar rover, based on a legend or theory that inspires them about the moon.

Next month, the winning teams will embark upon a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan to meet the official teams competing for a $30M Google Lunar XPRIZE, a global competition to land a privately funded robot on the moon.

For the first time since the inception of MOONBOTS in 2010, the majority of the winning teams’ members are female — breaking stereotypes in the typically male-dominated fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The 2015 MOONBOTS winning teams, representing three countries are:

  • Team GalacTECHs (Tustin, Calif.) comprised of two girls and two boys ages 8-11, who imagined a future where it’s common practice for people to vacation at a resort on the moon.
  • Linked Lunas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) comprised of twin sisters Hadley and Delaney, age 9. Their mission is based on a historical tale and scientific theory that hits close to home – that the earth once had “twin” moons that collided and merged into one.
  • Mecaliks (Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico) comprised of three girls ages 9-12, who were inspired by Mayan cultural beliefs that time is measured by lunar phases.
  • Moonshot (Brooklyn, N.Y. and Naples, Italy) comprised of two boy cousins, ages 10 and 12, who live across the world from each other but share a similar interest in the moon and the way it brings people together – just as it does in their family.

“In addition to showing ingenuity and innovation in their robotic building and programming, all four grand prize winners were creative and imaginative in the way they interpreted their moon ‘tales,’” said Chanda Gonzales, senior director, Google Lunar XPRIZE. “While each entry was unique, they were all incredibly engaging and will provide inspiration for kids all over the world.”

The winning teams will travel to Japan in October to meet up with the Google Lunar XPRIZE teams who are gathering for an annual Team Summit in Tokyo.

Teams are comprised of 2-4 members (ages 8-17) and one team captain at least 18 years old.A panel of judges selected 30 teams to qualify for phase two, each of which was provided one of three platform systems (LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, VEX IQ, MECCANO Meccanoid G15 KS) to build and program a unique simulated robotic mission based on the moon tale they submitted in phase one. In addition, they were asked provide a demonstration to the judges via live webcast and contribute to STEM education by sharing their innovation with children and adults in their community.

Since 2010, MOONBOTS has challenged thousands of young people from around the world. Women in Manufacturing (WiM) last night announced the receipt of a $100,000 grant from the GE Foundation. The grant was announced at the fifth annual WiM SUMMIT on Thursday, September 24, 2015 in front of a crowd of nearly 300 professional women in the manufacturing sector.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the GE Foundation,” said Women in Manufacturing President Allison Grealis. “The growth of the manufacturing sector is vital to the American economy. As a result, this grant from the GE Foundation is truly an investment in women’s education and leadership and also in the strength of American manufacturing.”

WiM is the only national organization specifically dedicated to supporting women in the manufacturing sector with year-round programming and a national directory for women in the industry.

The GE Foundation grant will support important WiM initiatives including regional and national programming and, in particular, new continuing education opportunities for women in the manufacturing sector.

Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX) announced its Praxair Surface Technologies business will begin marketing fine, spherical titanium powder for use in 3-D printing by additive manufacturers serving the aerospace, automotive, industrial and medical markets.

3-D metal printing with titanium, in which components are built up by depositing the material in layers, can lower manufacturing and raw material costs, improve fuel efficiency and enable the design of the most advanced parts, from aerospace brackets to biomedical implants. This enables the benefits of titanium’s strength, light weight and corrosion resistance to be further adopted in advanced applications.

“Until now, there’s been limited availability of fine, titanium powder in the marketplace to create parts,” said Dean Hackett, vice president of advanced materials and equipment for Praxair Surface Technologies. “That won’t be the case for long as we move into full-scale production of aerospace-grade, fine, spherical, titanium powder starting in the third quarter of 2015. In addition to supplying the powder, Praxair also offers the associated industrial gases to the additive manufacturing industry.”

Praxair’s ability to produce large-scale volumes of titanium powders designed for additive manufacturing is rooted in its more than 50 years of experience producing gas atomized powders for the thermal spray coating industry. In recent years, research and development efforts have focused on the production of metal powders, including cobalt, iron and nickel, for 3-D printing purposes. Further development of a proprietary atomization process designed specifically for titanium allows the company to make some of the largest batches of fine, titanium powder in the world.

Renishaw plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Clive Martell MSc, CEng, MIET, former President and CEO of Delcam, to a new role as Head of Global Additive Manufacturing.

Clive, age 54, progressed from a graduate recruit to become CEO of Delcam plc, where he successfully managed the company's transition from an AIM (Alternative Investment Market) company to an operating division of Autodesk. Professor Iain Todd, Director of the Mercury Centre, has been appointed The University of Sheffield and GKN Aerospace Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) research chair in additive manufacturing.

Supported by GKN Aerospace, the University and the Royal Academy of Engineering, for the next five years Prof Todd will focus on harnessing and developing the extraordinary potential of additive manufacturing (AM) for aerospace and other high value industrial sectors.

The role will have three fundamental aims: to assist in the industrialization of the current state-of-the-art technology as GKN moves towards production; to develop the required technology to enable the integration of materials and processes, extending its application in the short term; to create entirely innovative processes and materials that will carry industry well beyond what is currently possible.

Russ Dunn, Senior Vice President Engineering & Technology, explains: “AM technologies promise a paradigm shift in engineering design and materials. The University, GKN Aerospace and the Royal Academy of Engineering will make a combined investment worth £1m to support the chair over the five years, with the GKN Aerospace investment including funding for an additional 10 PhD students to support Professor Todd and the team of over 20 senior research staff already operating at the university.

The 3MF Consortium, an industry association recently launched to develop and promote a new full-fidelity file format for 3D printing, announced four new members:

  • 3D Systems – a provider of 3D digital design and fabrication solutions, including 3D printers, software, print materials and cloud-sourced custom parts

Governor Pat McCrory, N.C. Commerce Secretary John E. Skvarla III  and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. announced that Proto Labs, Inc., will be expanding in Wake County and creating 170 new jobs over the next five years. The company plans to invest in excess of $25 million in the Town of Cary over the same period.

The project was made possible in part by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund of up to $150,000. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance through local government to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.

In addition to the N.C. H.C. With the unique production technology developed by Metasphere Technology, a wide variety of metals and other electrically conductive materials can be processed into spherical powders. By restructuring of the material on a nano level, they can be precisely adjusted to customer-specific requirements relating to material characteristics like particle size and distribution. The powders are characterized by the absolutely perfect spherical shape of their particles and their homogenous structure through the entire powder. The leader of the soon-to-open training center on the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus is a well-recognized educator in the additive manufacturing field.

Ed Tackett is currently director of The RapidTech Center at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. He will become director of educational programs at the UL Additive Manufacturing Competency Center and a University of Louisville employee on July 1st.

The UL AMCC, which is scheduled to open this fall, will train engineers and other professionals from around the world on sophisticated 3D printing and other additive manufacturing machinery. The University of Louisville announced in May that it is opening the new training center with UL LLC, the Northbrook, Illinois based global science safety company.

The center will be located on Arthur Street in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering’s Institute for Product Realization. Training initially will focus on metals, with a curriculum covering design set up, machine assembly, and parts production, inspection and testing.

Tackett was selected after a national search. He has led UC Irvine’s RapidTech Center, which helps researchers and entrepreneurs quickly design and build product prototypes, since 2010. He held previous positions with the South Orange County (California) Community College District, San Diego Community College District and the United States Navy.

“I am proud to be joining the elite team at the University of Louisville to assist them in continuing development of their advanced manufacturing ecosystem,” Tackett said. “I have spent 20 years in additive manufacturing training and education around these technologies. With the strong public-private partnerships forged at UofL, we will be unparalleled in our ability to deliver certification of materials, processes, machines, parts, safety, quality control and workforce training.”

The Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, are preparing to launch a $100k technology startup competition called, “AMPED.” The competition has a focus on additive manufacturing, but contestants are also encouraged to submit business ideas related to business-to-business software and information technology.

Entrepreneurs, students and technology innovators from across the nation will have the opportunity to compete for up to $100,000 of investment funding and up to a $50,000 of in-kind professional services offered though the Youngstown Business Incubator. AMPED is not a traditional business competition in which cash prizes are handed out to the winners. Rather, it’s an investment opportunity for credible entrepreneurs looking to grow their early-stage start-up. Prize money will only be awarded to the team or teams that display strong business and technical acumen and have a viable business idea that can be taken to market. In order for finalists of the competition to be eligible to receive investment prizes, they must live or relocate in northeast Ohio.

From July 1 to August 14, 2015, contestants will be able submit their ideas via the third party business competition website, PitchBurner. Once all submissions have been reviewed, YBI will invite up to seven finalists to advance to the final round in Youngstown to present their ideas in front of a panel of experienced judges on November 2, 2015. The winning team or teams will then join YBI as a Portfolio Company where they will work toward taking their idea from an early stage start-up to a scalable business.

The Future Leaders in Plastic (FLiP) group, a segment of SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association tailored to professionals in the plastics industry under the age of 40, voted to elect Michael Stark, divisional manager, material handling and auxiliaries at Wittmann Battenfeld, Inc. as the group’s first official chairman. The group also elected Annina Donaldson, vice president of operations at Maxi-Blast, Inc. as its first vice chair.

The vote was held in early May and the results were announced at a FLiP meeting hosted just before the SPI Spring National Board Meeting, which took place in May at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, D.C.

He first received an associate’s in applied science degree in mechanical engineering technology from the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville, before earning a bachelor’s of science in mechanical engineering technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a master’s of business administration with a concentration in leadership from Post University.

Donaldson has been involved in the plastics industry her entire life. Growing up she worked part time in her father’s manufacturing plant doing various tasks but has been in her current role with Maxi-Blast for more than nine years. She spends much of her spare time doing local volunteer work with three different nonprofit groups: Hammers & Heels of Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Strays of Pinellas County and the Island Chapel of Tierra Verde, where she serves as chair of the church’s administrative committee. Donaldson earned a bachelor’s degree with dual concentration of marketing and entrepreneurship from Boston University and a master’s degree in marketing from London Metropolitan University.

UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science organization, will open a Global Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Singapore. Additive manufacturing (AM), also commonly known as 3D printing, is defined as the process of joining materials to make objects from three-dimensional model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methods. With an investment of S$8million, this facility will be the first-of-its-kind service offering for both UL and the additive manufacturing (AM) industry.

The new center, supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), will focus on advanced training, material and process validation programs, advisory services, and research to support both the local and global AM industry. This project is driven by UL's vision that AM will be the catalyst for global transformation in manufacturing. Through R&D collaborations with local research institutes and industry partners such as the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing and the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre, UL aims to help create a vibrant AM industry in Singapore and the region.

UL's Global Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence will address critical gaps in the industry through four key areas. First, it will provide advanced training curriculum to speed up adoption and readiness of a strong AM workforce. Next, the center's validation programs will address AM material and process qualification. Third, the center's advisory services will provide best practices on AM fast to production and AM part acceptance. Lastly, research will be conducted at the center to inform standards development.

Over the next several years, the facility's four technical service areas will support and expand Singapore's already well-established 3D printing infrastructure. The center is expected to employ 10 additive manufacturing technical experts.

3D Hubs and Thingiverse are excited to announce a new partnership to bring 3D printing to those who don’t own or have access to a 3D printer.

By connecting the world’s largest 3D print design community of Thingiverse to 3D Hubs, the world’s largest 3D printing network, we enable over 700,000 designs to be directly 3D printed at 15,000 locations worldwide.

A 3D print button will be featured on the Thingiverse website, which gives users the option to send desired designs directly to the nearest 3D printer via 3D Hubs and have it made straight away.

To kick off our partnership, Thingiverse has initially selected eight popular designers to integrate the 3D print button next to their designs and more will be added soon. These selected designers now have the ability to suggest a tip for using their design, which users can choose to pay within the purchase process on 3D Hubs. This fee goes directly to the designer as recognition and credit for their great work.

A 3D Hubs badge will be added to designs that are instantly printable via 3D Hubs.

America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is proud to announce its plans to open its first America Makes Satellite Center on the campus of the Institute’s Platinum-level member, The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), in conjunction with UTEP’s renowned W.M. Keck Center for 3-D Innovation.

Kevin Creehan, Ph.D., America Makes Deputy Director of Technology Transition, made the announcement on the first day of presentations at the America Makes Spring 2015 Program Review and Members Meeting, which was held on April 14-16, at the Williamson College of Business Administration Conference Center at Youngstown State University (YSU). In attendance for the announcement were UTEP’s Ryan Wicker, Ph.D., P.E., Director and Founder of the Keck Center and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Eric MacDonald, Ph.D., P.E., Associate Director of the Keck Center.

During his remarks, Dr. Creehan said, “Real-world technology transition takes place because of the activities and pursuits that collaborative and symbiotic relationships provide. With this new America Makes Satellite Center model, we are able to expand our current regional, industrial and technological footprint while further maximizing the reach and capabilities of the satellite through enhanced collaboration. We are proud to name America Makes member, The University of Texas at El Paso, as the site for the first America Makes Satellite Center.”

To ensure the long-term success of an expansion, America Makes decided to roll out the strategy as a pilot program, similar to the Institute’s own founding as the pilot Institute for the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) infrastructure. A short list of potential members for consideration for an America Makes Satellite Center was generated and compared to America Makes’ prerequisites and operational requirements. After internal and external vetting and an on-site evaluation, UTEP with its acclaimed W.M. Keck Center for 3-D Innovation was ultimately selected as the pilot America Makes Satellite Center.

GF Machining Solutions has appointed Scott Fosdick as its new Head of Market Region Americas. Previously the company’s Segment Manager for Aerospace and Automotive Asia, U.S. born Fosdick takes over for former region president Glynn Fletcher.

Fosdick holds a degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Colorado. He started his career in Japan as a development engineer for a Japanese machine tool company. Fosdick joined GF Machining Solutions, previously known as Agie Charmilles, in 1994. He successfully worked for technical service in Japan before taking over the position of Service Manager for Asia. In 2001, Fosdick became the President of Agie Charmilles South China and achieved outstanding results until he left the company in 2007.

In the following years, Fosdick further expanded his knowledge and experience in the aerospace market. He returned to GF Machining Solutions in May 2013 as Market Segment Manager for Aerospace and Automotive in Asia, prior to his most recent promotion to the position of Head of Market Region Americas.

Previously, Jerry served for 12 years as a president of major distributor companies, the last assignment involving a move to Minnesota where he integrated a recently acquired distributorship into the corporate company and culture. He has served in leadership roles for key builders, manufacturers and distributors in his 38-plus years in the industry, beginning his career as a Machinist Apprentice at GE in his home town of Erie, Pennsylvania. At AMT, he has chaired the CMTSE Committee and been actively involved on the Board of Directors.

Richard (Rick) L. Simons has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hardinge Inc., Elmira, New York, since May 2008 and became Chairman of the Board in February 2012. Prior to rejoining Hardinge in 2008, he was Vice President and Corporate Controller at Carpenter Technology, a publicly-traded specialty steel manufacturer (2005-2008). Mr. Simons originally joined Hardinge in 1983 and held various management roles before being named Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer (1999-2005). Mr. Simons has a B.S. from Bloomsburg University and an M.B.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is also a director of Sunnen Products Company, a global manufacturer and distributor of honing and bore sizing equipment and related accessories.

Most of their projects are complete turnkeys, which include automation and robotics.

Brian J. Papke is President of Mazak Corporation, Florence, Kentucky. Mr. Papke was named President of Mazak Corporation in 1989. Mazak Corporation is the North American manufacturing and marketing unit of Yamazaki Mazak, headquartered in Oguchi, Japan. Since joining Mazak in 1987, Mazak has completed 14 expansions, including the establishment of a National Technology Center and Customer Service and Support Center and a network of technology centers throughout North America. Recently, expansions have included $15 million on the Kentucky manufacturing plant and new Versatech bridge-style machining centers. Groupe Gorgé announces the acquisition of INITIAL, a French manufacturer of parts through 3D printing, and of NORGE Systems, an English start-up specialised in the design of selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printers.

These two acquisitions mark a significant step forward in the strategy implemented by Groupe Gorgé since entering the 3D printing market two years ago. The group intends to rapidly establish itself as a leader and to become the third-largest player in the world to offer a range of multi-technological services and all 3D printing services to its customers.

Groupe Gorgé has already completed several major milestones since acquiring Prodways Group in 2013. The achievements of this company's teams, headed by Philippe Laude and whose business activity increased fifty-fold in little over a year, gave global visibility to MOVINGLight technology®, which offers much greater precision and productivity in terms of 3D printing.

Thanks to these two strategic acquisitions, Groupe Gorgé's strategy - backed by Prodways Group - will be rolled out horizontally through the addition of new 3D printing technologies, and vertically through the development or acquisition of entities manufacturing parts through 3D printing. INITIAL is an independent French manufacturer of parts through 3D printing. In particular, it will have the opportunity to establish itself on key long-term markets with major customers that may wish to entrust the company with the mass production of parts. Thanks to INITIAL, Prodways Group can improve its knowledge of customer requirements and offer them a full package of services ranging from the manufacturing of a simple prototype part to the design of a comprehensive 3D printing studio, possibly operated by its own teams. This alliance will also enable Prodways Group to offer back-up solutions to its customers, which are essential in an industrial environment.

Integration of NORGE Systems' expertise

NORGE Systems is an English start-up whose founders developed a range of additive manufacturing machines (3D printing) using selective laser sintering (SLS).

The founders of NORGE Systems and the Prodways teams have been working together at Les Mureaux for several months to optimise these machines and to start marketing them. This acquisition marks an important step forward in the development of Prodways Group, which has achieved its goal of becoming the third-largest player to offer multi-technological 3D printing services. The first SLS machine should be operational in the first half of the year, and marketed before the end of the year.

Group Management will provide new revenue targets for the 3D printing business when publishing its annual results on 2 April 2015.
